This afternoon (4), Senator Aécio Neves (PSDB) spoke in the Tribune of the Federal Senate. Recently reinstated in his position, Aécio said that he will continue to say that he did not offer nor receive any illicit gains. He would have been the victim of a trap brought on by a confessed criminal of many crimes. He offered him only his family’s apartment, and the money received from the sale would help Aécio to pay for his expenses with lawyers. He would not have at any time obtained ilegal advantages from his political career. It would have been the entrepreneur Batista who proposed the loan, which would be, according to Aécio, duly registered in the future.
Ricardo Saúde, one of the businessman who made a plea bargain, would have said that he (Aécio) would never have done anything for them, which would demonstrate the parliamentarian’s innocence.
Aécio said that he was wrong because he had become involved in a “tricky plot” and let his family members be used as scape goats. He would have also been wrong to use a vocabulary that would not be common to him.
His mandated absense from the Senate would have been requested because three reasons: (i) because he had allegedly said, in private conversation – criminally recorded, he emphasizes – that a new law on authority abuse should be approved; (Ii) because in the same conversation – which he considered private – he referred to the increase in penalties for slush fund, which he considers a legitimate opinion of a parliamentarian in the exercise of his mandate, and (iii) because of his criticism of certain areas of the government, which would not be even remotely close to an attempt to obstruct justice, something which would have been attributed to him.
Aécio says he has never interfered with any organs involved in the so called “Car-Wash” investigations.
On the day when we can no longer exercise the right to contradictory, we will arrive in a moment of complete restriction. Article 53 of the brazilian Constitution ensures immunity by word and vote, which ensures that the mandate, a result of popular vote, is not threatened, and that there is no risk to the harmony between the Powers.
According to Neves, Minister Marco Aurelio of the Brazilian Supreme Court (STF, in the acronym in Portuguese) was responsible to say that precautionary measures, such as the removal of a federal senator of his position, represents the emptying of the democratic representation, and hinders compliance with the Federal Constitution.
He said that he is not burdened with the events of the past, and that he has eyes only for the future, and trusts the Judiciary to separate the facts of the political events. His return would be solely and exclusively due to respect for the law, with the firm intention of continuing to work, so that Brazil can overcome the economic difficulties and the deep social crisis in which the country finds itself. Reforms in this regard are essential.
Finally, he praises Senator Tasso Jereissati, who led (and still leads) PSDB while Neves was away. The end of the recession, the rebalancing of the external debt and the limitation of public spending, among others, are achievements that must be conquered in order for the country to grow.
Aécio ends his speech by saying that the biggest victims of the crisis are the Brazilians who need the support of the State the most, and that it will be through the good policy that we will find a new way, for Brazil and for the Brazilians.
